The dust hasn’t even settled on the announcement they’re headed for divorce, but already fans are speculating about Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s prenup, considering how they’ve both forged successful careers in show business.
The Game of Thrones star and pop music icon connected in 2016. While oh-so-casually modeling with a unicorn for Harper’s Bazaar UK, Turner explained that she and Jonas had quite a few mutual friends try to set them up, but it just never ended up happening. She said it must have been fate, though, because “[they] were following each other on Instagram, and he direct messaged [her] one fine day, out of the blue.” Bold move! But clearly, it worked in his favor. It’s also a technique that the JoBros seem to really like. Nick Jonas slid into his now-wife’s Twitter DMs with the line, “I think we should connect.”
A year later, he popped the question, and they got married in Vegas in 2019. Their first child, daughter Willa, was born in 2020 and their second, another daughter, in 2022. “It’s been amazing to be a dad and to learn every day more about myself and what that’s like,” Jonas told PEOPLE at the time. “It’s what life is about for me – raising the next generation,” Turner told Elle UK. “The greatest thing in life is seeing my daughter go from strength to strength. We’re so excited to be expanding the family. It’s the best blessing ever.”
But after news broke over the Labor Day 2023 weekend that he’d hired a divorce lawyer, fans were scrambling to find out why Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner were divorcing and what their post-marriage arrangement looks like.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s prenup
As with most marriages between two highly lucrative individuals, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s prenup is ironclad. According to The Blast, “Joe and Sophie were both quite wealthy before meeting each other and worked with top-tier attorneys in coming to a financial agreement,” the site reported, explaining that he’ll keep all of his royalties from his music—with his brothers or otherwise. For Turner, she will hang onto her Game of Thrones money and any residuals from her acting career.
Any property acquired before the marriage will stay in the owner’s name; meaning their “shared” houses in Miami, LA and the UK will stay with the person who originally bought them prior to their marriage. “The only property that will be split amongst the two stars will be the marital home. In most cases, a famous and wealthy couple like this will sell the property and split the money,” The Blast reported.
Where there may be clashes is child support and custody. In California, you can’t pre-negotiate finances if you have children, and a judge will ultimately decide who gets custody and where the children will live.
It sounds like Turner and Jonas are committed to the split being as amicable as possible. In a joint statement issued to Instagram, the couple explained: “After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” they said.
Divorce documents obtained by People revealed, “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken,” with sources explaining that the split did not come as a “surprise” to those who were close to the couple. “They were not separated but they’ve been living separate lives for months,” the source said. “As far as custody goes, this literally all just happened, so they’re figuring it out in real-time. They did have a prenup. As a family, they were based in Florida. The kids were with him the last few months, traveling with him with family while he’s been on tour. Sophie’s been working in the UK.”
According to a report by TMZ—the site first to break the news—Jonas filed the paperwork to end his marriage on September 5, 2023, hiring attorney Tom Sasser, who handled Tiger Woods’ divorce. Jonas would be asking for joint custody of the couple’s two children, Willa born in 2020 and their other daughter, born in 2022, whose name has not been made public.
TMZ added that they were told Turner and Jonas have had “serious problems” for the good part of the year, and that “Joe has been caring for their 2 young children “pretty much all of the time,” even as his band was touring. We’re told Joe currently has both kids, as the group plays around the U.S.”
Throughout their marriage, the couple remained private about their family life. In May 2023, Sophie Turner posted a video of Willa on Instagram but quickly deleted it. “I’m very protective of the life we’ve built,” she said in a subsequent Instagram post. “Every time Joe and I do a red carpet together, we make sure it’s for the right reason and makes sense for our careers. You never want to market yourself as a celebrity couple. It’s not that cool.”
“And my daughter never asked for any of this,” she went on. “I know what it can do to your mental health to be in this industry and to be photographed every day and have the comments. It’s not something I want her to deal with unless she says, ‘This is what I want to do.’ We’re quite strict about that. We’ll encourage her to do whatever she wants but I don’t think we would professionally let her do anything until she’s 18. I also feel quite strongly about my daughter not becoming a nepotism child.”
