She famously lied about her age when auditioning for That 70s Show, and while there’s only five years between them, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s age gap was significant at the time they shared their first on-screen kiss.
The popular sitcom That 70s Show ran for eight seasons, from August 1998 to May 2006. Kutcher played the character Michael Kelso, one of the main characters in the series, while Mila Kunis played Jackie Burkhart, another central character. Kelso and Jackie were in an on-again, off-again relationship throughout the series, and while they were just friends during their time on the show, their romantic relationship began years later.
“I did a movie called Friends With Benefits. [Ashton] did a movie that was very similar: No Strings Attached,” Kunis recalled during a July 2018 appearance on the WTF podcast. “We lived our movies out, where we were like, ‘Let’s just hook up. Let’s have fun. We’re both single. We both trust each other. Everything’s great.’ None of us wanted tension. OK, great. We hooked up for three months. And just like our movies, one of us caught feelings.” The couple got engaged in February 2014 and tied the knot in a private ceremony in July 2015. They have two children together, a daughter named Wyatt Isabelle Kutcher and a son named Dimitri Portwood Kutcher.
But the couple has come under hot water for expressing their support for Danny Masterson, their That 70s Show co-star and convicted rapist, and an old interview has resurfaced with Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s age gap at the center of it.

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s age gap is five years, but she was 14 when they started working together on That 70s Show. She admitted to lying about her age when she auditioned for the role of Jackie. “There’s a rumor going around that I may or may not have lied about my age. I’d like to make it very clear now that I did lie. I did,” she told Variety in 2022.
“However, by the time I went to what was then a producer’s network call…you have to sign a contract before you get the job and in my contract, I had to put an asterisk for ‘studio teacher,’” she continued. “They were like, ‘What do you mean?’ And I was like, ‘Oh P.S., I’m 14.’ But at that point if you talk to the creators, they were like, ‘We loved you at that point so what did we care?’”
She continued: “It was in the heyday of older kids playing younger kids and I was actually of the age of the character,” Kunis added. “I was never treated as lesser then. If I did by one of the cast members another cast member would stand up for it. The reason I don’t do drugs was because nobody on the set did. And I looked up to them at 14. The trajectory of my career could’ve gone any which way…but the set was cool.”
As mentioned, Kunis and Kutcher played opposite each other as romantic interests and after the couple faced backlash for writing letters asking for leniency in Danny Masterson’s sentencing for two counts of rape, an old interview resurfaced where she detailed Masterson trying to bet Kutcher to “French kiss” his then-minor-aged co-star.
In a joint interview on The Rosie O’Donnell Show that aired in April of 2002, Kunis and Kutcher described her first few days on set and how the script called for “making out” in the scene. “I never kissed a guy … I was a 14-year-old little girl and I was extremely scared for my life,” Kunis said. “Danny goes, ‘Dude, I’ll give you $10 if you French kiss her,” Kunis said, turning to Kutcher and asking, ‘What, if you stick your tongue in my mouth?”
Kutcher added: “I’m like thinking this is slightly illegal, right,” explaining that Masterson wagered him $20 that he “wouldn’t do it.” O’Donnell joked, “And then the cops showed up and you got arrested, pretty much.” Kunis then explained, “I didn’t let him … he never got his tongue in my mouth.” Kutcher then said he actually believed Kunis was 15 at the time, “There’s a big difference—that one year makes the whole world change.”
In another old video that’s resurfaced, Kutcher described a 15-year-old Hillary Duff as “one of the girls that we’re all waiting for to turn 18,” in a 2003 clip for his prank show Punk’d. “Hilary Duff is in Lizzie McGuire, she also has an album out. She’s going to be in a movie called Cheaper by the Dozen,” said a 25-year-old Kutcher about the Disney star at the time. “And she’s one of the girls that we’re all waiting for to turn 18. Along with the Olsen twins.”
Masterson was convicted on two counts of rape in May 2023, receiving 30 years to life at sentencing in early September. Kunis and Kutcher’s letters of support for their co-star were leaked, showing how they asked the judge for leniency and referring to him as a person of “innate goodness and genuine nature,” and possessing “concern for those around him and his commitment to leading by example make him an outstanding role model and friend,” per Kunis, while Kutcher wrote: “As a friend, Danny has been nothing but a positive influence on me. He’s an extraordinarily honest and intentional human being.”
In reading their victim impact statements, the court heard a heart-wrenching account of how the victims’ lives had been forever altered by his actions. “When you raped me, you stole from me,” Jane Doe #2 told the court.
“That’s what rape is, a theft of the spirit. You are pathetic, disturbed and completely violent,” she said. “The world is better off with you in prison.” Jane Doe #1 said Masterson “has not shown an ounce of remorse for the pain he caused. I knew he belonged behind bars for the safety of all the women he came into contact with,” she said. “I am so sorry, and I’m so upset. I wish I’d reported him sooner to the police.” Jane Doe #3 said Masterson’s actions sentenced her to “viewing my body as a crime scene my entire life.”
