I’ve been getting a small amount of lip filler for the past few years. It’s not super noticeable to anyone but me but I love how it evens out my top and bottom lips and makes them more visible in photos when I smile. (Small-lip folks know what I mean!) To make them more dramatic at times, I like playing around with lip plumper. So, I was excited when the brand-new brand, Polite Society rolled out its B.I.G. Mouth Lip Plumping Oil Gloss. I tried it and let me tell you, it’s no joke.

But let me back up a little. Polite Society is the new brand from Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson, the founders of Too Faced Cosmetics. It’s clean, meeting Ulta Beauty’s “conscious beauty standards,” and cruelty-free with a focus on good-for-you ingredients. Products are free from things like talc, alcohol, parabens, gluten, and mineral oils.

In addition to the lip plumper, the brand has rolled out Go Flush Yourself Blush & Glow Face Palette ($39 at Ulta Beauty), More Than a Pretty Face Skin-Caring Foundation ($42 at Ulta Beauty) Greatest Lashes of All Time Volumizing, Lengthening, Lifting & Curling Mascara ($27 at Ulta Beauty).

It’s all nice and all works well. There’s no miss, here. But a brand with the tagline “make your own rules” and “clean but not boring,” should be bold and exciting, bigger than nice. I want more from the brand and I’ll be watching — and trying it all because Jerrod and Jeremy are icons in beauty.

What is bold? The B.I.G. Mouth Lip Plumping Oil Gloss.

Jerrod and Jeremy know lip plumpers so I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised at how well this one works. It’s made with infinity pepper (capsicum) and ginger root oil to plump and blueberry oil to hydrate. If you couldn’t tell from the ingredients, this is the burn-y kind of lip plumper.

This was me in the back of an Uber with my bare lips.

I applied a layer or two to my lips and the burning started right away. This was after just one minute.

This is NOT for the weak. After five minutes, my lips were burning and tingling worse than any other lip plumper I’ve ever used. And I’ve tried ’em all. It actually burned a little too much and I ended up wiping off the gloss just a bit.

As you can tell, it works. But you have to be ready to feel the burn. I made a friend try it at dinner last night and she didn’t mind the sting and was able to keep it on. I think the key is to just apply one layer and stay inside your lip line — unless you’re tougher than me.

One thing that’s especially nice is how hydrating it is. When I wiped the gloss off, my lips actually felt soft. That’s rare with a lip plumper. So, if you want some faux lip filler and hydrated, juicy lips, this is definitely the one to try.

Get it at Ulta Beauty now — if you dare.
